One or Two Breeds of Akitas

Akitas are classed as working dogs with the American Kennel Club. Other animals in this class include Mastiffs, St. Bernards, Huskies and Labradors. The Akita breed originated in Japan, and is widely credited with having arrived in the United States in 1937, when Helen Keller brought a dog into the country.

Akitas are quiet dogs for the most part. The dog has strong guarding instincts and can be counted upon to make lots of noise if an intruder is spotted. One of the big issues with Akitas is their temperament. These dogs range from calm to bouncy and aggressive. Akitas should generally be supervised around small children and other animals. Obedience training for Akita puppies is needed if you want a happy household. Akitas consider themselves the "pack leader" unless you take command through training. The breed is one of the cleaner dogs, grooming itself like a cat. Daily brushing and daily exercise are needed for these animals.

Akitas are found at professional dog shows regularly. Here are a few of the guidelines the AKC has for the Akita Standard Breed. Check if your dog fits these standards.

Size: for males 26 to 28 inches tall, females 24 to 26 inches. Dogs under 25 inches from floor to withers are disqualified.

Tail: large and full carried high in a curl over the dog’s back

Head: forms a blunt triangle when viewed from above

These are just a handful of the breed standards with the AKC. You can grab more about Akitas and Akita puppies, training, feeding, and history at the links below.

This is my picture. Do you have rights to use this pic? Why it's in bad quality?

They photoshopped your watermark out. You can contact the publisher of the page to remove it or you can take legal action which is always fun.
